"Should I stay and adjust, or should I leave?"
This is the most agonizing, terrifying question a person will ever ask themselves. In India, where the cultural pressure to "make it work" is immense, considering divorce brings a tidal wave of guilt, fear of societal judgment, and anxiety about the future.
We often tell people to fight for their marriages through therapy and coaching. However, as relationship experts, we also know that some marriages are fundamentally broken beyond repair, and staying will only destroy your mental and physical health.
If you are paralyzed by indecision, here are the 5 undeniable psychological signs that it is time to stop trying, call a lawyer, and walk away.
This is the absolute hard line.
If you are experiencing abuse, your primary goal is not fixing the relationship; your primary goal is a safe extraction.
Many marriages can survive and actually grow stronger after a single instance of infidelity if the cheating partner is deeply remorseful, entirely transparent, and willing to do the grueling work of rebuilding trust.
However, if your spouse is a serial cheater who gets caught, apologizes, cries, and then does it again six months later, they are not sorry they cheated. They are only sorry they got caught. When infidelity becomes a repeating pattern, the disrespect is permanent. You must walk away to protect your dignity and your sexual health.
Psychologist Dr. John Gottman famously identified four communication styles that predict divorce with over 90% accuracy. They are:
If your marriage consists entirely of these four behaviors and your partner refuses to attend couples counseling to fix them, the marriage will inevitably die.
The opposite of love is not anger; the opposite of love is apathy. If you still scream and fight with your partner, it means you still care enough to want them to change. But if they do something terrible—like staying out until 3 AM without calling—and you realize you simply do not care anymore, the emotional bond is dead. When you look at your spouse and feel absolutely nothing—no anger, no love, just numb indifference—the marriage is a hollow shell.
If you strip away the fear of your parents' reaction, the fear of societal judgment, and the financial anxiety, and you ask yourself: "If I won the lottery today and nobody would judge me, would I stay with this person?"
If the answer is a definitive No, you already have your answer. You are not staying for love; you are staying for fear. Raising your children in a toxic, loveless, tension-filled house is far worse for their psychological development than raising them in two peaceful, separate homes.
Leaving a marriage in India requires meticulous strategy, not sudden impulse.

Contempt has replaced anger — eye-rolling, mockery, a settled sense of superiority. You have stopped bothering to raise things because you no longer expect a response. You feel relief rather than loneliness when they are away. And you can no longer describe a version of the future together that you actually want. Apathy is a later stage than conflict, not an easier one.
The evidence does not support it as a general rule. Children raised amid sustained conflict or contempt fare worse than children of a well-handled separation, and they usually perceive far more than parents assume. The exception is genuine low-conflict distance, where the calculation is closer. What harms children most reliably is being made an instrument of the conflict, which can happen inside a marriage or after it.
In a rough patch both people are still trying, even badly, and there is a specific stressor you could name. In an ending, effort has stopped being reciprocal, the problems have become general rather than specific, and attempts at repair are received as an imposition. The reliable test is whether repair attempts land at all — in a rough patch they occasionally do.
Get independent legal advice before announcing anything. Secure copies of financial documents, identity papers and property records. Open an account in your own name if you do not have one. Understand your position on maintenance, residence and custody. If there is any risk of violence, safety planning comes first and should involve a lawyer or a helpline rather than family mediation.
Usually yes, unless abuse is present — in which case joint counselling can increase risk and individual support is the right route. Discernment counselling is designed specifically for couples where one person is unsure whether to stay. It is a short, structured process aimed at reaching a clear decision rather than at saving the marriage by default.
