Indian weddings are spectacular. Families will happily spend tens of lakhs—sometimes crores—on the perfect venue, designer lehengas, celebrity makeup artists, and gourmet catering. Couples will spend 12 months obsessing over flower arrangements and photography angles.
Yet, when asked what they have invested in preparing for the actual marriage, the answer is usually: absolutely nothing.
With divorce rates in metropolitan India rising sharply, the "adjust kar lenge" (we'll adjust) mindset of previous generations is no longer sufficient. Modern couples need more than love and good intentions to survive; they need tools. This is why pre-marital counseling is rapidly becoming a non-negotiable step for smart Indian couples.
Pre-marital counseling is a specialized type of relationship coaching designed to help couples identify potential areas of conflict before they get married. It is not about finding out "if" you should get married, but rather preparing you for how to be married successfully.
A relationship coach acts as a neutral facilitator, ensuring that both partners put their cards on the table regarding expectations, values, and non-negotiables.
In the Indian context, there are specific friction points that can destroy a marriage in the first three years. Pre-marital coaching tackles these head-on:
Money is one of the leading causes of divorce. As dual-career couples become the norm in India, new questions arise. Will we have joint accounts or keep our money separate? Who pays for the household expenses? What are our debts? How much financial support will we give our respective parents? A coach forces you to answer these questions honestly.
Are we living in a joint family or nuclear setup? If nuclear, how much interference is acceptable from the parents? What happens when a mother-in-law criticizes the wife? Establishing boundary expectations before the wedding prevents massive heartbreak later.
Many women find that progressive men while dating suddenly expect a traditional housewife once married. Pre-marital counseling explicitly maps out chore distribution. Who cooks? Who does the laundry? If one person gets a promotion in another city, does the other compromise their career?
Do you both actually want children? If so, when? What if you face infertility—are you open to IVF or adoption? How will you raise the children? What values or religious views will you instill in them?
How do you fight? Does one person give the silent treatment for three days while the other yells? A relationship coach teaches you how to "fight fair"—how to de-escalate arguments, listen without getting defensive, and attack the problem instead of attacking each other.
A common fear among young Indian couples is that seeking counseling means their relationship is weak or "doomed." If their parents find out, there is often panic: "What's wrong? Why do you need a therapist? Are you having second thoughts?"
Here is the truth: Seeking pre-marital counseling is the ultimate sign of maturity. It means you love your partner so much that you want to bulletproof your future together. Just as you wouldn't drive a car without taking driving lessons, you shouldn't enter a lifelong legal and emotional contract without relationship training.
The return on investment for pre-marital coaching is unmatched. For the price of what you'd spend on a minor wedding decorative item, you acquire communication skills that will save you years of arguments, resentment, and potentially, the devastating emotional and financial cost of a divorce.
The wedding lasts for three days. The marriage lasts a lifetime. Prepare for the latter.

A counsellor works through the areas couples most often assume agreement on: how money will be handled, expectations around living with or supporting parents, whether and when to have children, how careers will be prioritised, and expectations about intimacy. Much of the value is simply that both people answer the same question at the same time and hear the difference.
Four to six sessions is standard, spread over a few weeks. Fewer than three rarely gets past the surface of any topic. Start three to six months before the wedding — close to the date, people are too stretched and too invested to raise anything difficult.
Often more useful, because the couple has had less time to discover disagreement organically. Arranged matches typically confirm compatibility on background and family expectations but rarely on daily-life questions like household finances or decision-making. Counselling supplies the conversations that dating would otherwise have produced.
No, and the stigma gets this backwards. Couples who arrive already in trouble are doing repair work; couples who come before marriage are doing preparation. The second group has substantially better outcomes precisely because nothing has broken yet and neither person is defending a position.
Ask what specifically they object to — usually it is the word "counselling" and the implication of a problem, not the conversations themselves. Reframing it as a structured planning session works for many people. If the refusal holds even after that, the refusal itself is worth paying attention to, since it previews how future difficulties will be approached.
